More than 3,500 Comments Support Medicare Coverage for Seat Elevation Systems in Power Wheelchairs

On September 14, CMS closed an initial public comment period on Medicare coverage of power seat elevation systems in power wheelchairs. The ITEM Coalition sincerely thanks all wheelchair users, providers, caregivers, advocates, and organizations who submitted comments. CMS received more than 3,500 public comments in support of making sure people with disabilities are able to access the technology they need to live healthy, functional, and independent lives.

CMS is now reviewing all comments submitted, and we expect the agency to release a proposed decision in February 2023. This will trigger another 30-day public comment period, and we will be seeking additional comments from all individuals and organizations who commented the first time to support what we hope will be a favorable decision. The agency will issue its final coverage decision for these systems in May 2023

Unfortunately, CMS decided to delay review of Medicare coverage for power standing systems to a later date. The ITEM Coalition remains seriously concerned and disappointed with this decision and will continue to implore CMS to open an analysis of power standing systems at the earliest possible opportunity.

While we wait for the next public comment period, we encourage all advocates to Register for Updates and Sign the Petition if you haven't already. Thank you for your support!
